Two youth, who were stranded on 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway due to closure of the road following snowfall, were on Sunday found dead inside their vehicle.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has expressed grief and shock over the death of two youth, residents of north Kashmir district of Kupwara.
“Two youth, identified as Shabir Ahmed Mir and Majid Gulzar Mir, were found unconscious inside their load carrier at Railway Station Banihal on Sunday morning,” they said.
They said the duo was immediately taken to Sub District hospital Banihal, where they were declared brought dead. “The duo has either died of hypothermia or asphyxiation,” they said.
They, however, said that the cause of the death was being ascertained. “Police has registered a case and initiated investigation into the incident,” they added.
The death of the duo sparked violent protests by drivers and their co-passengers on the Railway Chowk Banihal.
Lashing out at the administration, Mr Tarigami said that the incident was the result of criminal negligence of the authorities. “It must be probed and those responsible for negligence must be identified and booked,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader alleged that the Centre’s promises on development in Jammu Kashmir after abrogation of  Article 370 has proved to be a mere joke. “The Srinagar- Jammu National Highway connecting the Kashmir valley to the outside country could not be constructed. The road is often closed due to bad weather conditions and in winter, the problem is aggravated by snowfall. The highway has become a nightmare for the commuters due to its pathetic condition,” he added.
